How to read a peptide certificate of analysis

A certificate of analysis is only useful if you know which four fields actually matter. Here is how to read one in under a minute.

Start with the batch identifier

The first thing to check is that the batch identifier on the certificate is character-for-character identical to the one printed on your vial. A certificate for a different batch tells you nothing about the material in front of you, no matter how good the numbers look.

Aura Peptide Co. uses the format AUR-XXX-YYMM, where XXX abbreviates the compound and YYMM is the production month. Every published certificate on the Lab Results page carries that same identifier.

Check the identity confirmation

Purity means nothing without identity. The mass-spectrometry section should list a theoretical monoisotopic mass and an observed mass, and the two should agree within the instrument's stated tolerance.

If a certificate reports purity but never confirms identity, it is telling you that something in the vial is 99% pure — not that it is the compound you ordered.

Read the HPLC trace, not just the number

Purity is reported as the area percentage of the main chromatographic peak, usually at 214nm. A 99.4% figure with a clean baseline is a very different result from 99.4% with a cluster of unresolved shoulders.

Where the trace is published, look at peak symmetry and whether any secondary peaks elute close to the main peak — closely eluting impurities are typically the hardest to remove.

Confirm the test date

A certificate dated two years before your batch was produced is a supplier reusing paperwork. Test dates should fall within weeks of the production run, and long-term stock should carry a re-test date.
